What Can Science Say?
Disintegration of Body
When the great Buddhist masters die they know before hand and
they go into meditation and we never know when exactly they pass away. They die
in the meditation position and if no one disturbs them, their body
disintegrates into air. If someone disturbs them before they disintegrate fully, their body will have shrunk and become small. What can science say about
this peaceful passing away of great masters in meditative state and finally disintegrating?
Phowa Meditation
The great Buddhist masters can perform phowa meditation, a meditation
which can directly lead them to heaven (Zangdopelri). With the help of this
meditation, they can also liberate others from sufferings. The Buddhist practitioners
also learn this mediation and there are stories of successful accomplishments.
There are also stories that, while doing a phowa meditation under the guidance
of perfect teacher, the grass (tsa khusha) that they keep in the middle of their
head moves into the head which is a sign of successful phowa meditation. What can
science say about this meditation?
Terdag or Shaman
It is a practice in Bhutan from time immemorial but is slowly
fading away now. When someone is very ill, in earlier days they often use to
perform Terdag. It is a kind of ritual a man performs who is believed to have
been possessed by some deities. He performs fiercely and his acts are usually abnormal. There
are stories of even stabbing himself and nothing happens to him. He can also
drink the boiled oil and nothing happens to him. He can speak any language which
he doesn't know otherwise. Once the ritual is over, he remembers nothing about
his act. What can science say about this ritual?
Reincarnation
Some great master when they pass away, they are reincarnated as
young generation. Some can even predict where will they be born in next life.
When they are born, they can tell the whole story of their previous life and
most amazingly they can even identify their own belongings in the previous
life. When these great masters are reincarnated, they are being known by some
other great masters and are identified as so and so tulku (reincarnation of great master). What
can science say about this ability?
Black Magic
It was really famous in olden ways, even today, it is believed
by many. People say it is hereditary. The person who performs black magic kills
someone whom he/she wishes to kill. When people are sick, they go to astrologer
to seek help. The astrologer tells them, someone has performed black magic towards them and
it has reached the final stage, so it has to be removed at the earliest. There are also
stories when this black magic papers have been removed with the help of
astrologer, the paper moves when it is held tightly with our hands. When this paper
has been removed and burnt, the person becomes alright. What has
science got to say about this Black magic?
Ngoenshey or
clairvoyance
Some great Buddhist masters can tell what is beyond the mighty
mountains and can also predict the future. Some can even tell someone's past
lives and his/her future lives. What can science say about this power of
clairvoyance?
Delog or life after
death
Some women especially who are locally known as Delog are considered
dakinis in villages. On the auspicious day, these Delogs passes away and after few hours they revive. There are also stories where some can even stay up to a week without
breathing. Once they are awake, they tell stories to the people who have
gathered there to come to listen to her. She tells stories of hell and how the
people are suffering in hell. She also brings messages from the person who has died
long ago to be delivered to his relatives in this world. After that, she led a normal life.
What can science say about the life of such women?
There are many facts in Buddhism which are still left as unsolved
mysteries. But we cannot undermine the power of science. There will be a time
when science will have all the answers to these and many other unsolved
mysteries.

My Cup is Half Filled
The most beautiful thing
in your eyes may not be as beautiful as you beheld in the eyes of mine and the
same could be the reverse. That totally depends on how we perceive things
individually. That is why we say beauty is subjective.
Beauty is just one
mentioned here but in life there are many things we see differently. We
encounter good and bad in our journey of life. Good and bad here could mean anything
that we come across: people, things, situation, etc. But it all depends on how
we take it. There are no mistakes as all mistakes we make are lessons in life
or in other word as the old famous saying goes “failures are the pillars of success”. There is nothing to be
dejected when we fail. It is known that to reap the joy of success, we will
have to experience first the pain of failure. If we do not experience the pain,
how will we know the taste of success? For example if we have toothache and we don’t feel any pain, there
will be no happiness when the toothache has been cured. The point here is,
only because we suffer the pain of toothache, we get the taste of relief and
joy when it has been cured by the Dentist. So mistakes and therefore a failure
should not be seen as an unbreakable barrier, it has to be looked as a seed of
success and happiness ultimately.
Our perception could
sometimes deceive us like the mirage in the desert. We have to see and think
beyond. People often say; seeing is believing but even after seeing, it is
always wiser to look and contemplate beyond what we see or touch. Our mind is
used to perceiving and interpreting what our eyes see and body touches then
that has been articulated by our mouth without storing the information and
thinking beyond. Although this activity is involuntary, it has to be put into practice
that we should give a second thought before anything has been decided or
spoken. That will be the wisest decision. Why do we hate people, because we see
something bad in them and we love someone because we see in them something admirable.
But we have to know that unless we are Buddha or in other words unless our
Buddha nature has come out after all the obscuring defilements have been
removed, we are never perfect. If not fifty-fifty, certain portion of us will
be either bad or good.
People often say a coin
has two sides; it is in fact the fact. That is why we have to look beyond what
we see and study well before any comment is made. In our Buddhist monasteries,
we build statues to be kept in the altar for the visitors to worship. While
making the statue, a builder never leave the backside of the statue untouched
or unfinished because it will be facing the wall and no one will know; even if
the backside faces the wall and cannot be viewed by the viewers, the builder
takes into consideration that the statue is built complete from all sides. In a
similar way, we as the beholder should not judge anyone or anything just by
seeing what can be seen rather like the statue builder; we have to know that
there is also other half which has to be taken in consideration though it cannot
be seen whether good or bad. Only then decisions followed by action have to be
taken.
If we are given a half empty coffee cup, how will we interpret? It is obvious
that many of us will see a cup is half empty. This is how we are used to with
our brain interpretation. We always fail to enjoy the other side of what we
see. If we see the other side of what we see, many of the decisions that we have
made earlier and failed miserably could have been a success story. Do not be
deceived by what you see and make a hasty decision. See it from a different
angle and try to see the other side of what we actually see. Contemplate and meditate
over it if you can. Judge everything positively and everything turns out to be positive. Only then when you are given a half empty coffee cup, you
will be the one to say “My cup is half filled”.

G2C Project- A Tool for Good Governance
Bhutan is the land of peace and the people living here does love
peace. The main guiding philosophy of all the developmental activities in
Bhutan, the Gross National Happiness (GNH) is supported by four pillars. The
forth pillar, Good Governance is one important pillar that the government of
the day has been focusing. The G2C or the Government to Citizen Project is at
its full swing with government's main focus to take the services to the
doorstep of the citizen. It is aimed at delivering services more efficiently
and effectively without people having to go from office to office in order to avail
the services.
There has been established a Community
Centers (CC) in every Gewog where the people can avail basic services through
e-governance. The government has been working on putting most of the services
online. The delivering of services online is e-governance. This can also help
reduce the face to face interaction of the clients and the service provider. In
this way some form of corruption like favoritism and nepotism could be
prevented. In order to avail these online services, CCs have been established
with one or two operators helping the people avail the services. The online
services delivery saves time and resources for our people and most importantly,
the services are delivered in time.
The G2C office under the Prime Minister's
Office has been working towards digitizing most of the services which can be
delivered online and making available for the people. The office also creates
awareness among the citizens and also provides hands on training for the
service providers. If this project becomes successful, the service delivery
will become more efficient and the forth pillar of GNH will be accomplished. It
is the responsibility of each and every one of us who knows about the G2C services
to abreast our people about the availability of such facilities in their own
villages so that, they can make use of CCs and at the same time, the objective
of our beloved Kings and the Government could be fulfilled.

Live the Life, the Best You Can
It is apparently clear, though we all share the same traits of
human beings, we do not share the same liberty, pride and happiness in this
world. Some are traumatized physically and some mentally. Those happy are the
ones who think that whatever they have in life is enough. Happiness is not
something we can buy, like many says, money can buy wealth but not happiness.
We have to create it. How do we create happiness, give happiness to others and
feel satisfied with what we have and have done. If we can bring a smile to
someone's face, the emotional feeling that we get looking at the smile of
others is the ultimate and the lasting happiness that we can think of. The
satisfaction in whatever we possess and whatever we do in life is the happiness.
Learn to be satisfied and contented. If every one of us could think about the happiness of others,
there is no need for wars investing hugely; it is a pure waste. These huge
amounts wasted on wars can be used to elevate the hungers in the world, provide
medication and create an avenue for happiness for those who are the victims of
poverty: hunger and epidemics.
Start your day with prayers. Pray for all
sentient beings, for their well-being and happiness. Greet with smile
irrespective of young or old. Smile cost nothing but rewards double. We should
not harm others or feel bad for others if we are not able to give them
happiness. No animals should be mistreated as every living organism under the
sky wants happiness and doesn't want sufferings. There is no point in
regretting of the past event(s) as it is gone already; living in the future
does not make sense as it is certain that future is uncertain. So live at
present and enjoy what we do with what we have. Thinking about the past and future
only stresses our mind. If we have goal(s) in life (it is important to have
good goals) and if we are thinking about it, it is a good thing but simply
building a castle in the air is wastage of time and energy.
Leading a simple life, respecting others
and doing everything with passion and get satisfaction out of doing something
is the way to lead a happy life. Start off a day with a smile on the face,
light meal; warm greetings and prayers. It will set a good mood with great zeal
the following day. Let others say anything about you, be indifferent. Do not
look at the cup as half empty rather look at it as half full. That is how we learn
and develop to look and enjoy the positive side of everything. Lead a Happy
Life.
